| John Dyer Seagulls take off in Japan |
The John Dyer Gallery in association with Hibell in Japan has just returned from a highly successful tour of four of Japan's major cities, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka & Tokyo . An exhibition titled "Happy Summer Paradise" has been on tour in nine of Japan's most prestigious gallery spaces across these cities and John Dyer made personal appearances at six of the venues.

Above: John Dyer in Ginza, Tokyo with his new triptych "Love Story" which is proving popular with the Collectors in Japan.
One of the galleries is in the world famous 'Matsuya' store in the Ginza district of Tokyo. This store and the district are the equivalent of Park Avenue in New York and is the center for business and high quality retail and art outlets.
"This has been a fantastic experience for me - people have travelled from all over Japan to meet me on the tour and it has been incredibly interesting to listen to my new Japanese collectors discussing my work. We have launched a vibrant new range of limited edition prints in Japan to accompany the exhibition and the images of St Ives and the Helford Passage are very popular. Many collectors are buying my print of the Helford Passage with a yellow sky to hang on the west wall of their homes as in Japan a yellow sky hung on the West will will bring the family good fortune." John Dyer
"The Japanese are very familiar with the UK, London and Harry Potter but they have never come across Cornwall before so this has been an amazing opportunity to promote Cornwall as a destination. We are sure that many people from Japan will now be looking into traveling to Cornwall as a holiday destination to track down the famous John Dyer Seagulls and the amazing tropical plants that grow here. With nine galleries in the top retail locations in Japan actively promoting John's work and Cornwall as a destination this is bound to have an impact." The John Dyer Gallery.
"We are delighted with the work of John Dyer, in Japan we usually promote western artists for 3 to 5 years before embarking on a tour, but in the case of John's work this has been put together in under a year due to the popularity of his unique style of work. We already have plans to expand the range and we have commissioned the artist to paint a new painting called 'St Ives Happy New Year' that we will launch in December" Art Director of Hibell John travelled to Japan with his family and his wife, artist Joanne Short. The John Dyer Gallery will be exhibiting works inspired from this trip towards the end of this year and the exhibition will include work from both John and Joanne. The artists found the blend of culture, ancient temples, geisha and the high tech skyscrapers fascinating. While in Japan the family also experienced an earthquake and narrowly missed the largest cyclone Japan has ever seen in July.

PENWITH PORTRAIT
The Mount is definitely a magical place of childhood
dreams; a place where dreams don't disappear as
you grow up. We spent a fantastic time as a family
on this fairytale island - perfect evenings in the
garden watching the full moon shimmering across
still water with the castle rising into the dark
blue sky. While living on the island we were lucky
enough to feel part of this very special island
community which made us so welcome. Our time on
the island exploring and dreaming has resulted in
an exhibition of paintings which I hope captures
the essence of the island, the sheer thrill of being
alive and the wonderment of being a child.'Sailing
and Swooping around the Mount, by John Dyer, priced
at £2,750, can be seen in the exhibitionPaintings
from a Small Island, which is on show from tomorrow
(Friday, May 11) at the Island Cafe on St Michael's
Mount and which features the work of John Dyer and
Joanne Short.

| Tresco
Estate acquire new John Dyer Painting of Tresco Marathon |

Above:
'Everyone's a Winner, Tresco Marathon 2006" 24 x 24
inches acrylic on canvas.
To
help to celebrate the 2007 Tresco Marathon the Island
Hotel on Tresco have acquired the painting "Everyone's
a Winner" by artist John Dyer.
The painting features in the new book about John's
work
'A Vision of Paradise' by Brian Stewart and
is one of John Dyer's key celebration paintings.
The
painting was completed last year during the 2006
marathon while John Dyer was resident artist on
the island and depicts the finishing line which
is just outside the hotel. All of the celebrity
runners are depicted in the painting with Bill Bryson
being easy to spot in his yellow top with 'Bill'
on his shirt. Jenny Agutter can also be spotted
on the left of the painting and is that Charlie
Dimock floating topless out in the bay !
Dara O'Kearney who won the race can be seen in the
front of the painting celebrating with number 86
on his shirt.
The Tresco Marathon came in to being seven years
ago when Peter Hingston and then Island Hotel manager
Philip Callan decided that they would like to raise
money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, as Peter's
daughter Jade, now aged eight, suffers from this
debilitating and life-shortening disease. Total
funds raised to date exceed £300k.
"The Tresco marathon was
such an amazing and fun event to watch and paint.
The island is a very challenging place to run around,
but the support that the runners get from the community
and the Tresco estate is fantastic. It was a real
joy painting this and I hope that it comes to epitomize
this amazing event." John Dyer.
It
is hoped that at some point prints of the painting
might be made available to support the Cystic Fibrosis
trust, but in the first instance the artist, The
John Dyer Gallery and the Island Hotel on Tresco
are all delighted that this painting will now be
on public display for all of the runners to enjoy
and to take inspiration from.
The
Tresco Estate have a number of John Dyer original
paintings; with two of the largest hung at the heliport
on the island.

During
May 2006 John Dyer and Joanne Short were the Artists
in Residence for St. Michael's Mount. Working with
the island Manager and the St. Aubyn family the
two artists have realised an exciting and unique
new set of work which will be exhibited on the Mount
at the end of the year.
The BBC did four live transmissions from the Mount,
using their satellite outside broadcast unit to

| Famous
UK artist visits Banrock Station |
Text
from Banrock Station's Autumn News.
Seeing is believing! And never have
truer words been used to describe the artworks of
famous UK artist John Dyer. The Artist-in-Residence
at the Eden Project, in Cornwall in the United Kingdom,
John has just spent a week at Banrock painting the
many diverse and unique landscapes of the property.
John is a highly sought-after artist, commissioned
to paint his unique 'plantscapes' throughout the world.
At Banrock, his colourful and detailed style captured
the wildlife and plant life against the natural backdrops
of the wetlands, floodplains, mallee woodlands, vineyards,
river and the mighty cliffs. His visit follows Banrock's
amazing sponsorship of the Eden Project's Good Garden
program last year. The Eden Project is the amazing
vision of Tim Smit, who inspired the support of the
UK Millennium Program to help fund the creation of
massive glass domes covering a disused china-clay
mine pit in Cornwall, now housing rainforest landscapes
and other Mediterranean landscapes that attract 1.5
million visitors every year. An exhibition of John's
latest work, the Banrock Station Exhibition by John
Dyer, will be held at the Eden Project in June this
year to coincide with Tony Sharley's visit to the
UK. |

and a portrait of the artist with his wife, Jo Short
(also an accomplished artist), and their daughter
Martha-Lilly enjoying the firework display. The work
will become part of the permanent collection and was
funded by Brunel 200 an initiative of Bristol Cultural
Development Partnership. John Dyer's work is popular
and his painting marking the arrival of Ellen McArthur

'I

charity. The painting 'Blue Sky, Tresco' is of one
of my favourite places and a place that my family
feels relaxed, happy and safe in. Children In Need
raises awareness and money to support children that
sometimes miss out on those qualities in life and
I hope that the auction of this original painting

"The
new puzzle that has been created of my 'Garden of

permanent collection, is an amazing piece of engineering,
It is beautifully produced and includes a fantastic
set of 'drawings' interpreted into puzzle pieces,
I have even sneaked in a drawing of Tim Smit and
'Bella' the wonderful dog that frequents Eden's
offices. For me I hope the puzzle will make people
really look at my work, and through this look at
the huge range of plants at Eden. For me the puzzle
helps to highlight 'diversity' and makes people
connect to the fantastic biomes of Eden in the most
wonderful and powerful way possible - through sheer
good fun and play." John Dyer

To
celebrate its 20th anniversary, INIBAP, in collaboration
with an international agricultural research centre
(CIRAD), a Belgian university (K.U.Leuven) and a
ground-breaking British educational charity focusing
on plants and people (Eden Project), have produced
the exhibition "No end to the banana",
inaugurated in Leuven, Belgium, in 2005. "No
end to the banana" is a travelling exhibition
that uses the banana as a vehicle to talk about
genetic diversity and how research and development
can use the existing diversity to produce better
and healthier bananas for consumers everywhere and,
at the same time, help improve the livelihoods of
banana farmers.
The
text from the panel:
"In
Spanish, the banana became known as platano, whereas
most European languages adopted the word bananaborrowed
from one of the African languages spoken around
the Gulf of Guinea. Nobody knows why the Spaniards
called the banana platano, a name they were already
using to designate the plane tree. They might have
been inspired by to the local names for bananas
(one of the words for bananas in the Arawak and
Carib languages of western South America is palatano).
This would support the hypothesis that the banana
arrived before the Spaniards. The alternative is
that the indigenous people borrowed the Spanish
word. "

"We decided that one key painting would be far more
powerful than a series of smaller paintings, so Eden
organised a special area for me to work from so that
I could see the whole event, feel the music, watch
the crowd, but have my own space to create in. I wanted
to capture the African energy of the performances
and to set this off against the world beating architecture
of Eden, and I am delighted by the result.
The painting was taken down into the crowds and caused
quite a stir. It is amazing how many people have a
digital camera hidden in their pockets ! All of the
Eden directors including Tim Smit gathered to see
the new painting which was received with great enthusiasm,
and I hope that the image of the painting will be
used to promote Africa and Eden."

John

"John arrived on a beautiful
summers day, just as dumper trucks and diggers noisily
invaded the garden. A long awaited 'tropical garden'
was going to be built the same week as our 'artist
in residence' had come to paint, and I was worried
the mayhem might distract him. He instantly put
us at our ease, and wandered off into the garden
to find a place to sit and paint. Each day he arrived
early, and painted huge canvases full of vibrant
colour, and every day we were entranced. Our children
were captivated not only by the paintings, but by
John himself who took time to involve them. The
results were magical, and perfectly captured the
special atmosphere we feel living in this beautiful
place, on a hill somewhere in Hertfordshire. I have
always had immense respect for anyone who chooses
to take time to interpret out world for us through
painting, and feel especially privileged to have
hosted such an inspired artist in our back garden!
My lasting memory of him will be of him and his
wife Jo, jiving wildly at the party which we threw
to celebrate the new garden. His paintings decorated
our home for the night, but I would have gladly
have given them a home for life!"

| Talk
at the Eden project - John Dyer & David Ashe
|

"To
Eden and Beyond..."
A
Talk by John Dyer and David Ashe Thursday 25th September
2003 at The Eden Project, Cornwall SOLD
OUT
"Last
January, many eden Friends had the opportunity of
hearing about our Resident Artist John Dyer's latest
paintings. A special evening, hosted by Alan Titchmarsh
was both entertaining and informative. Since then
John has been involved in some fascinating work,
and has agreed to return to Eden to share his new
experiences.
'I was asked to paint
bananas, and thought it would be great to see them
in their natural habitat; before long I found myself
in the jungle surrounded by bugs'
John Dyer.
John flew to Costa Rica with film maker, photographer
and presenter David Ashe of iCapture Productions.
David will be joining John on stage to talk about
their amazing trip, giving us a unique insight into
John's life and paintings. The stories of their
experience not only bring out the artistic side
of the expedition, but also help us to understand
the difficulties and some of the humour that a trip
like this often brings.
The
talk will contain excerpts from the film of the
trip, images of the paintings, and a chance to ask
John and David questions."

"We
asked John Dyer to paint bananas because they are
a smallholder crop - grown in people's back gardens
and farms along with lots of other fruits and vegetables.
John's pictures are all about diversity and bringing
out what might pass unseen. In this case, it seems
to have been scorpions!"
Charlotte Lusty, International Network for
the Improvement of Banana and Plantain.www.inibap.org
"We
started each day at 5:30 am, as dawn broke, and
the night sounds of the jungle quietened down. While
John painted I watched, intrigued by how he would
stand in front of a blank canvas and appear to perform
a mystical dance waving a dry paintbrush around,
as he began to 'see' what the painting might become.
I was fascinated to watch the colour appear and
the literally brilliant images emerge."
